Recommended Attire

At SSF, most of your visit will be outdoors, interacting with nature. We recommend wearing appropriate clothing to make your visit comfortable and protect you from the elements. Our typical climate is warm with strong sun, although the trails are well shaded by the forest canopy in most parts. We have two rainy seasons per year, with rain common in the months of March, April, May, October, and November. The other months (northern hemisphere summer and winter) are mostly sunny, but the occasional storm can pop up. During El Nino cycles our climate is drier, and during La Nina cycles our climate is wetter.

  • A hat for protection from the sun

  • Light-weight, long sleeve shirt and pants for protection from sun, insects, and twigs

  • Shoes or boots with aggressive tread that you don’t mind getting wet or muddy. If you tell us your shoe size well ahead of time, we can pick up a pair of rubber boots for you for 40,000 pesos (~$10) from town. You are free to keep the boots if you want, or if you don’t want to keep them, we can donate once-used boots to local farm families in need of better footwear.

  • We keep sunscreen and DEET-free herbal insect repellent at the farm for visitors who wish to use them. If you have a particular type of sunscreen or repellent that you like best, feel free to bring it with you.
